Good Day, everyone, I'm Moh, and today's Topic
is going to be all about life after the film
school graduation I'm gonna start by
going back just a little bit right
before graduation, I had sent out so many
online applications it felt like
hundreds of hundreds of them and it was
probably only about fifty which doesn't
sound like a lot but after a while
leading up to graduation you know it was
getting closer and closer and I wasn't
hearing back from anyone I was sent
applications out into the void and it
would be radio silence and so I started
to freak out a little bit because myself
and all my other peers to just nobody
was hearing back nobody was getting
interviews it was really just starting
to become more of a negative thing which
was upsetting luckily I had a part-time
job at that point and I still do but it
felt like nothing full-time was willing
to hire everybody was advertising oh
great unpaid internship great unpaid
part-time thing and I was like how does
any one's supposed to make a living off
of an unpaid job all these applications
are going out nothing was coming back in
and I think I was just getting to a
the point where I was sunning myself like
calm down you'll find something
eventually so just focus on what you're
doing now
the part-time video job that I was doing
for the last couple of years actually
ended up continuing into the summer so I
had that to fall back on and I actually
also got another part-time job although
it's not video related it was still a
really good boost that I was able to
just kind of do some extra work on the
side to fill in the gaps there and then
what I ended up not planning on doing
but what ended up kind of falling into
my lap was taking on a lot of extra
freelance stuff so because I have my own
video equipment I was able to film some
YouTube videos for people film some
promo videos and just do a couple of things
on the side, they were also paid luckily
one of the classes I was taking
the professor was basically teaching us how
to live our lives after graduation and
she gave us the good advice of which
the direction you can take after you
graduate, so there were basically three
options for film students one was to
take the freelance route which was a
little bit unsure but you could find
study work if you were consistent enough
the second was a nine-to-five job which
is more what I was looking for full-time
steady job in an office doing the same
thing kind of everyday third option was
to be a production assistant so working
on movie sets short films commercial
sets all that for that work it's a
little different in freelance and that
it you can be contracted to do it but
the jobs will only maybe the last two months
or three months and then once that
/ you're stuck until you find the next
position again going back to
the build-up to graduation and when you had
given us a lot of information info
sessions link career networking events
all this kind of stuff to help you find
a job but the thing was it was one step
shy from actually giving us a job and in
some ways I really wish that they would
just hand out jobs like that but I mean
there's so many of us graduating luckily
at film school, they say that you can
still, come back and utilize all the
career resources after you graduate so
that's always a good thing to fall back
on especially if you're considering
going to film school and you want to get
a job in film right after graduation
definitely, if you're applying or wanting
to transfer call there resource centers
and ask what kind of career development
options that they have so at this moment
right now like I said I'm doing some
freelance stuff on the side and two
part-time jobs which I'm really enjoying
everything I really kind of like
exploring all of it and there is a draw
to do you know 9 to 5 job every single
day but at the same time it's kind of
fun to just have kind of a weird
schedule because video stuff isn't
always perfect it's not always a cut and
dry like show up here do this do that
every single day of the week now that
I'm at a school and looking back on it
I'm actually really glad to be done with
classes I enjoy having a little bit
extra free time I don't have to do
homework anymore which is so nice and I
actually do have time to take on more
freelance stuff and shoot more videos
which is ultimately what I really love
doing it gives me a little comfort to to
know how hard it is for everyone it's
not just me
winning the film school or any college
you know you've got really good
credentials and you're qualified for a
a lot of stuff it just takes a matter of
patience and really digging around to
find the right position for you they're
all my updates about my life after
graduation I hope these little pieces of
the advice can help you if you're nearing
graduation soon or if you're considering
going to film school now I'm not the
a perfect example of what life looks like
after film school, this is just my
experience and what I've been doing but
there are so many other options out there
everybody has their own path and life so
everyone is going at their own pace but
if you're considering going to film
the school then just keep in mind that as
you near graduation it is crunch time
everybody's looking for the same job
everybody's looking for something to do
so you kind of have to find a way to
stay cut above
