At long last — after a delay to shore up character designs and visual effects — Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog has entered theaters. Earlier in the week, Rotten Tomatoes revealed the Tomatometer for the blockbuster sat at 63 percent Fresh, a modest rating for the video game adaptation. Now that audiences have had the chance to swarm to theaters to take in the film, a separate rating tells a much more friendly story for Paramount.

Sonic the Hedgehog, the third movie about an oddball video game hero, opened at #2 at the box office with an estimated $22.8 million in North America. It was far enough behind The Last Airbender (at #1, $28.4 million) to qualify as a moderate success. The more dramatic statistics speak to the quality of the film. Sonic will be playing a valuable role in keeping Paramount in the box office game.

Thus far, the Paramount strategy of releasing five expensive movies within a short period of time has paid off. The following three films have combined to gross more than $270 million. Most Hollywood studios would never be able to survive the loss of such a massive chunk of revenue.

David Cronenberg fans have been waiting for a return to theatres with this return to the horror genre. After over 20 years, Cronenberg has released The Fly II, Dead Ringers, and Nausea. Last week, his two previous films were released in a triple-bill, seeing a combined total of over $30 million at the box office.

Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity 2 saw a strong opening weekend of $14.7 million from just over 2,000 screens. This is a much larger opening than the original film, which opened with $8 million. This marks the largest opening for a horror film in 2007, and the biggest Halloween weekend debut. The original Paranormal Activity opened with $8.4 million in its initial weekend.

The once-estranged couple reunites for a new romance. For the first time since the series first launched, John Voight and Molly Parker return as Captain Boomerang and Linda Marley. The trailers for the sequel have done a fantastic job at getting audiences excited. The film has also been receiving excellent reviews. It currently has a 72% on Rotten Tomatoes.
