One question I get asked a lot from
young aspiring filmmakers is should I go
to film school
many people are adamantly against the film
school saying it's unnecessary and a
waste of money well others think it's
crucial if you want to learn the craft
so let's go over five pros and cons of
film school
- Pro number one it'll build
resourcefulness filmmaking is expensive
gear is expensive locations are
expensive it's also expensive many
students start out thinking they have to
use a bunch of gear but end up realizing
it's really not all that necessary
film school will teach you how to make a
lot with a little plus if you're working
on class projects, you will get major
student discounts in Los Angeles for
example a location permit costs well
over $700 but if you're shooting for a
class project the price can be as low as
$100 many rental houses will also give
you big student discounts take advantage
of this while, you have the chance
2. Pro number two the network in film school
you are provided a network of classmates
professors and alumni were all going to
be great connections for you to the film
industry this network will help you get
internships crew experience jobs after
graduating and feedback on all of your
projects this ecosystem can be
invaluable to your growth as an overall
filmmaker especially when you're
starting out
3. Pro number 3 freedom there
are many different types of film
programs that you can attend some are
purely academic where you watch and
study tons of different films write
critical essays and graduate with the
film Studies degree
others like BFA and MFA programs are
extremely focused on teaching you one
specific craft some are a hybrid of the
two
whatever the case film school allows you
the freedom to explore the art of
filmmaking and develop your voice as
an artist under the instruction of a
professor, it's sort of like backpacking
across Europe but with cameras and in
the sound stage and in a classroom and
it's a lot more expensive than Europe
4. Pro number four in-state tuition can be
relatively inexpensive there are a lot
of great public universities that have
great film programs like UCLA or UT
Austin whose tuition fees are literally
a fraction of the cost that it would be
to go to a private school if there's a
local university in your state see how
good its film program is you might get a
pretty great affordable experience and
5. Pro number five education at the end of
the day film school is a school you'll get
to learn all about cinema history
and theory and if you're in a production
oriented program you will get all kinds
of access to equipment and learn all
about cameras different editing systems
lighting producing and more YouTube is
awesome but having an experienced
professor teach you hands-on how to set
up and shoot a camera is an invaluable plus
the knowledge of foam degree provides
can expand beyond just film for example
if you're in a producing program you
will learn tons about business and
entrepreneurship if you're studying
cinematography you will learn a lot of
technical skills beyond just camera work
so there are five pros to film school
but now let's go into the five cons to
film school
- number one price this is the
big and obvious one private schools are
expensive AFI USC and NYU are all well
over $50,000 per year plus the cost of
making your films if you go to film
the school you might accrue up to a quarter
of a million dollars in loans so unless
you really want the Education film
school might not be for you if you don't
want to be paying off student loans for
the next 300 years - number 2 the Internet
if you google free online film class you
will literally get millions of results
the Internet has a ton of resources for
learning filmmaking for example a lot of
the content in our form in a film
school episodes are taught in graduate
level film classes shameless plug and
even more advanced programs like Shane's
inner circle can be an entirely online
film school in and of themselves there
are tons of resources online where you
can essentially build your own
custom-made curriculum and learn
whatever you want to learn leave a
comment below right now and tell
everyone your favorite online filmmaking
resource - number three structure in film
school you'll learn what your professor
wants to teach you which might not be
what you want to learn don't get me
wrong structure can be a good thing but
if you're dead set on wanting to learn
how to shoot on an Alexa but your
instructor is dead set on teaching with
the red you're going to spend about 8 to
12 weeks of learning what a camera you
don't want to learn about speaking of
cameras - number four is gear accessibility it has
never been easier to make a film while
having constant access to an ari Alexa
or red helium would be awesome you can
definitely make a very high quality
short or even feature film with
a prosumer cameras like a 5d a 7s or gh 5
some film schools teach you how to shoot
on $150,000 35 millimeter cameras that's
awesome film will never die but with all
the technological advancements in cinema
especially in the past 10 years some may
argue that you're better off investing
in a camera package than a camera degree
and - number 5 it won't guarantee you a
job
well film school can help you build a
network your degree won't automatically
guarantee you a job in fact many people
don't care about your film degree at all
and simply want to see your resume and
your reel of course if you play your
cards right it's definitely possible but
many people will say that you're better
off skipping film school all together
and to start simply crewing so there you
have it 5 pros and cons of film school
but we want to hear from you what's your
the story did you go to film school are you
glad you did it or are you as super
a successful filmmaker with absolutely no
formal education whatsoever they become
and below telling us about your
experience and the best common rule
