Do you want to be a film major?

I think one
of the most common misconceptions that
people have about going into film school
is that it's easy because you can't
really grade art I'm here to tell you
that you can great art and all of my
professors do the professors aren't
necessarily grading your creativity but
I can say particularly as a screenwriter
we learn methods and concepts that we
are supposed to apply to our assignments
that our professors then give us a grade
for and that brings me to the topic of
the structure I feel like a lot of films
students at least those emphasizing in
screenwriting come into the first few
semesters of college with this mindset
of I don't need structure I'm an artist
haven't you seen memento that's what I
thought one of the things that my
screenwriting professor told me that is
always stuck with me is that you have to
learn the rules in order to break them
and that's why you go to film school to
learn the rules but like do you even
really need a degree to get into the
film industry can't you just like dive
right into it you absolutely can
end up being a PA for a while but then
again you might end up being a PA after
graduating from film school – I
personally wanted to have the full
college experience so that's a path I
chose common misconception number four
is that grades won't actually matter in
the film school because of people who
are going to be hiring me are gonna be
looking at what I've actually made right
yes but also know if the reason your
grades suck is because you haven't been
grasping the concepts that were taught
in-class very well then you're probably
gonna have issues on the other hand if
you're just spending so much time on
personal projects and we can see in
those personal projects that you're
actually learning something from the
classes that you're taking then you can
probably get away with getting a couple
seat
in your classes however, if you're
getting scholarships for your
performance in school then you're
definitely going to want to make sure
that you're doing well in all of your
classes regardless these might get
degrees but library trips get
scholarships I know that was really
corny but I worked really hard on it
one thing that was really scary for me
going into film school was that I seem
to notice at every school I visited that
all the prospective students seem to
kind of just be out for themselves and
so going into film school I was a little
bit scared feeling like I was gonna be
alone in this
although films will be a brutal
a cutthroat place to be it can also be a
place of such tremendous creative growth
if you have the right mindset going into
it I've been so blessed to be at a
the university where everyone in our film
school is just so willing to help each
other grow and learn in their creativity
and I think it's because everyone has a
the mindset that this isn't all about me
sure it's a competitive industry but
film school is the place where you meet
your crew and you're not going to meet
your crew if you're trying to step on
everybody's face while you're there so
if you want to be a film major be humble
be friendly and be willing to learn Do you want to be a film major?
