Midnight Mass

Midnight Mass. This is a limited seven episode series on netflix right now directed and written by mike flanagan if you guys know me I love mike flanagan. I think he's one of the best people working in the industry period, when it comes to horror he's also just a really nice guy and I have been impressed with everything. he's ever made, I'm just going to read the IMDb log line for midnight mass an isolated island community experiences miraculous events and frightening omens after the arrival of a charismatic.

Mysterious young priest going into the show I knew only that I didn't watch the trailer I just saw like the poster image and I knew it was about a priest I don't know I had no what the show was about.[adace-ad id=”5497″]

Which is what I implore all of you to do if you have somehow avoided spoilers I really would like you to be able to see the show knowing nothing from beginning to end. this show absolutely riveted me it had me in its grasp I have as a very traumatic past with religion.

I've talked about this very openly, I believe that I was raised in a cult and I escaped I haven't seen a show or film in many years that captured what that feels like what it feels like to realize you're part of a community that maybe doesn't have your back but they keep saying they do that's a very horrifying feeling and flanagan. as I've said in all of my reviews of any films or television shows he makes understands that the real scary stuff in the world is the stuff that just kind of exists that we kind of accept and happens in broad daylight and just down the street and this show explores many dark and terribly tragic things that happen often in the world with some added spice because that's the best horror the best for is stuff that we can understand that we can relate to but there's like a little ingredient in there whether it's some supernatural thing or whatever that just kind of gets the wheels turning and gets you kind of cool and midnight mass has something that I won't get into until I talk about spoilers which of course I'll give you a warning that kind of blew me away it's very rare anymore that something that I see has the capability of actually surprising me malignant was one of the last ones that did and it's extremely rare for that to happen because we're fed so much information, by the internet by trailers by marketing by social media about things before we ever sit down to actually read or watch them and it was really nice to be watching a show that I thought was one thing and then said no it's actually.

It's more like this that was amazing I really wish more studios had balls like this to market something and have it be that and have it be satisfying as that but also say it's this too and isn't that kind of cool I think it goes without saying at this point that all of the performances the cinematography the music the newton brothers it's all great everything flanagan does just looks and sounds phenomenal his editing the way he edits the scares his minimal jump scares they're not even really jumps there's a few and the ones that are there are just perfect as always and it goes without saying at this point it's kind of strange to be like well all that stuff that's really hard for other people yeah he he does it really well.

Enough about that though let's talk about some it's weird because it's like that deserves a lot of credit most horror filmmakers don't get it they look down on the audience of horror films and tv shows they believe that we're a bunch of like ravenous teenagers who just want to see somebody chase through a hallway that's part of it that's fun that's exciting and it's cool and you can have some popcorn but that's not it that there's more and midnight mass just it just ticked all the boxes for me every single one of them samantha slogan sorry if I said her name wrong place bev keen a villain that would make gus fring from breaking bad shiver in his boots she is horrifying in this show and take it from me not far off from real people who exist hamish linklater as father paul blew me the away what an incredible actor he has so many monologues given that he's the priest and he's doing a lot of sermons lots of blocks of text.

The kind of blocks of text that most people would read a spec script and say no one will ever read that there's too many blocks of text you need to remove 47 ellipses from your script he was so phenomenal everyone in the show is is absolutely great but I really want to highlight him because I I had never really seen him in much before and I thought he was just incredible so was zach gilford a really masterfully understated performance and kate siegel once again was phenomenal everyone on the show was really great and that's about it for non-spoilers I have to get into spoilers so if you have not yet seen midnight mass check it out it's only seven episodes it's worth your time let's talk about the secret behind the show.

So as the show progresses you see characters [adace-ad id=”5497″]on this isolated island drinking at the church the blood of Christ, the body of Christ it's something that everyone just does when they go to church and it's extremely accepted but what if there was something in that cup that you weren't supposed to drink that had an adverse effect on you and in this case we have sort of a hidden vampire story and what I love about this is that flanagan found a way to combine two different things vampires and religion specifically christianity and depict a situation in which a bunch of people could be told the right things and see the right things and genuinely believe that they are speaking to an angel which is actually a vampire and is just feeding on them and the priest who was once old is now young again and he has seen these abilities for himself and he found this thing in an unearthed bit of ancient ruins that was under a sandstorm and everything just clicks for all these people and they all seem to believe that these abilities they have are coming from god and they need to turn everyone else and those who don't want to be turned clearly aren't in god's favor.

What a brilliant idea the idea that vampires something that sucks the life out of people usually their blood first could be somehow attributed to the church this is obviously going to offend many people and maybe it has maybe it won't I don't think that's really the point here I think the point here is that we as people can be very gullible and we have to really be discerning when we're listening to someone who's in a position of power tell us what to do with our lives because they could be wrong take it from me now obviously I didn't experience any literal vampires when I was a jehovah's witness but I was told to do things that I look back on now and think how incredibly shocking how morally demeaning how rude and horrifying of a person I was told to be and I just did it because I thought god wanted me to so really no show or film has ever impacted me in this way flanagan nailed it this is very much so what it can feel like when you realize you're part of something that doesn't really have your back even though they keep saying they do and it's truly unpredictable I was on the last episode I had no idea what was going to happen not a clue.

But I was excited for it to unfold that's great writing midnight mass, is my favorite thing flanagan's done in television I loved every second of it it is absolutely phenomenal it's going to impact you differently if you've never had a religious background of any kind or you've never faced any trauma caused by religion it could also be offensive to some people but I think all great horror is in some way there's always somebody who raises their hand and says excuse me that's offensive to me about every great horror film or television show that's ever existed so I don't know just deal with it, I guess it's a tv show with vampires this show meant a lot to me I had never really felt. my experience translated in a way through horror that was digestible and immediately understandable and I loved every second of it. I think you should definitely check it out. guys thank you so much as always for reading, look forward to more Review and the ninth annual halloween special coming very soon and if you like this you can click right for more here .
